Denying Mental Health Parity – A New Twist

A therapist I contacted told me health insurance plans aren’t accepting new mental health providers into their networks. She charged $100/per session upfront and didn’t take insurance. Actually, she attacked me because I had suggested it’s not right to self-select only patients that can afford to pay upfront. I had no idea dirty pool was going on.

In other words, to deny mental health coverage to patients, health insurance plans aren’t accepting new mental health providers into their networks.  Yet you can bet and even Sarah Palin would say “you betcha” that these same health insurance plans ARE accepting new primary care doctors into their networks.

It doesn’t help that therapists think everyone can afford to pay $100/per session out of their own pocket for four sessions a month. Paying for therapy would then cost half of a person’s rent money.

And if you’re a therapist, you really should reconsider how you respond to a person seeking your help.

An omen of what would have come?

Dirty pool indeed all around.
